Credit Repair Services
There are some individuals with poor credit who would prefer not to attempt to repair their credit themselves. This may be because they may feel like the situation is too far gone or the whole process may seem too complicated. In these cases, individuals may choose to work with a credit repair services company. A legitimate company can help you take a good look at your credit report and help you come up with a plan to improve your credit score. However, while there are some legitimate credit repair services, there are also those that are unscrupulous and will either offer you ways to improve your credit using illegal means or who won’t help you at all but will instead, simply look to take your money.
A company that requires upfront payment, especially if it's a large amount should be avoided. It will take several months, maybe even a year before you see any significant difference in your credit score. Therefore, if you pay these companies upfront, you won’t know until it's too late whether or they have actually helped you. If they have not, then you will be faced with the difficult task of trying to recover your money.
You also want to avoid any credit repair services company that suggests that you get a new Social Security number or a new identity. This is illegal and you could be jailed for it. The idea of starting over is very tempting. Many people would love to dump their old credit scores and start over. But avoid this, no matter how great it sounds.
You will also need to choose the right company to work with. To determine if a credit repair services company is legitimate, you will need to do a little research and use a little bit of common sense. Check with the Better Business Bureau and see if there had been any complaints filed. You also will want to check with the Attorney General’s office to see if likewise, there have been any complaints. Next, do a simple Google search on the company. If what you find that are complaints, claims of abuse or of stealing money, than obviously you to want to avoid these companies. Also be sure to use common sense. If it sounds too good to be true, than it probably is. No legitimate, bad credit repair services company can improve your credit substantially in 30 days or give you A-1 credit in two months, if your credit is extremely poor. So using some common sense will help you avoid dealing with companies that won’t actually help you, but can end up hurting you substantially and even lead to you spending time in jail.
